Lonely TTRPG EP 45 - Queenless by Croaker RPGs

Our Queen is dead! Such sorrow and despair! Without our Queen, our hive, our home, will slowly perish. Our only hope, our only slim hope, is to find, beg, borrow and steal enough Royal Jelly from our neighbours. If we have enough Royal Jelly, maybe, just maybe, we can raise another Queen.

In Queenless you’ll explore the valley, meeting other insects along the way. Your aim is to recover six jars of royal jelly, which your hive will use to raise another Queen. Some insects are friends, such as the Ants who share much in common with the Bees. But some are deadly foes, like the Praying Mantis, who would like nothing more than to eat you up little Bee.

Queenless is built as a solo game from the start with tables, exploration, and other mechanics that will keep you interested and challenge your little bee as it explores the valley on its quest. The core mechanic is based on Firelights, where you use a deck of standard playing cards and dice to determine success, partial success, or failure. You flip two cards and compare them to a dice roll+stats. Easy to figure out and resolve.

Thoughts: This is a lovely map builder with strong whimsical elements. Definitely worth a look.

SteelStash:

Greetings, weary Wanderer and welcome back to another edition

SteelStash:

of Lonely T T R P G, the Solo Actual Play and Review podcast.

SteelStash:

This week we are playing Queenless by Croaker RPGs.

SteelStash:

Now before we dive into this couple disclosures.

SteelStash:

First of all, sorry for.

SteelStash:

Missing last week.

SteelStash:

We had some technical difficulties.

SteelStash:

I think we've worked through 'em, so hopefully this will go on without a hitch.

SteelStash:

As for the second disclosure, Croaker is a good friend of the podcast.

SteelStash:

He and I are members of the League of Incredible Soloists, a fun little

SteelStash:

group that we have with some other great names in solo literature.

SteelStash:

To include Eric from Drakenspyre and P T F O, as well as Tavon over on Thunder Fang.

SteelStash:

Basically just a couple of us trying to get together and help promote each other,

SteelStash:

provide a little bit of advice, ideas, stuff to bounce off back and forth.

SteelStash:

So,

SteelStash:

Yes.

SteelStash:

While my reviews are always positive, this one is definitely gonna be

SteelStash:

more positive as this is a friend.

SteelStash:

I did help out with some of the some of the idea generation.

SteelStash:

I was a sounding board and I've been excited about this game for a hot minute.

SteelStash:

So I am super excited to dive on in.

SteelStash:

Our Queen is dead.

SteelStash:

Such sorrow and despair.

SteelStash:

Without our queen, our hive, our home will surely perish.

SteelStash:

Our only hope.

SteelStash:

Our only slim hope is to find, beg, borrow, and steal enough

SteelStash:

royal jelly from our neighbors.

SteelStash:

If we have enough royal jelly, maybe just, maybe we can raise another queen.

SteelStash:

All right.

SteelStash:

So the point of this game is you play as a bee in search of royal jelly, and you must

SteelStash:

search the valley in order to find some.

SteelStash:

There will be friends and there will be enemies along the way in order to

SteelStash:

help out or hinder your and your quest.

SteelStash:

So to play this game, you're gonna need a standard deck of cards, two six-sided

SteelStash:

dice, a notebook, index cards, or random slips of paper, and some sort of token.

SteelStash:

To start the game, make sure you have a couple of hours

SteelStash:

of spare time ahead of you.

SteelStash:

Shuffle and place your story deck on a flat surface and gather your dice.

SteelStash:

When creating your bee.

SteelStash:

Choose your bee's name and preferred pronouns.

SteelStash:

Your bee has three approaches, forceful, patient and quick assign

SteelStash:

plus two to one plus one to another, and the third will have zero.

SteelStash:

Your goal, your hive is in danger.

SteelStash:

Your queen has died, and without a queen, the hive will surely and slowly perish.

SteelStash:

The hive looks to you to recover six jars of royal jelly, which

SteelStash:

can be used to raise a new queen.

SteelStash:

Each jar of jelly is held by one of six creatures in the valley.

SteelStash:

Some are friends and some of enemies, some jars you'll be able to ask for,

SteelStash:

some you'll have to barter for, but others you'll have to fight for.

SteelStash:

So actions guide your journey across the valley.

SteelStash:

Each one is a self-contained system, which helps you resolve the questions

SteelStash:

you have or the actions you want to take.

SteelStash:

When making an action, go through the following.

SteelStash:

Draw two cards from your story deck roll and sum your two action dice.

SteelStash:

Add any modifier's to your role to get your score.

SteelStash:

Then interpret the result as follows and discard the cards.

SteelStash:

If your score is higher than both cards, you are in bloom.

SteelStash:

If your score is higher than one card, you are budding, otherwise you wither.

SteelStash:

Now for this, ACEs are worth one.

SteelStash:

Jack's 11, Queens, 12 and Kings 13.

SteelStash:

Each action is formatted actions plus modifier, and tells you what happens

SteelStash:

when you are in bloom, budding or wither.

SteelStash:

For the gameplay loop as a solo game, you have no GM to develop the story.

SteelStash:

Instead, you will use your own creativity, actions and oracles that will build the

SteelStash:

story and drive you forward on the quest.

SteelStash:

The gameplay is generally meant to be played as a loop.

SteelStash:

First, discover a region, finding whatever is there.

SteelStash:

Then engage with the region.

SteelStash:

It's dangers and boons..

SteelStash:

If you find a fellow creature, you may engage with them in

SteelStash:

a positive conversation to barter or if you must to fight.

SteelStash:

Finally, once you've explored the region to sufficiently, you'll discover

SteelStash:

a regent and start the loop again.

SteelStash:

Continue to gameplay loop until you have found all jars of royal jelly.

SteelStash:

Save your hive little bee.

SteelStash:

For exploring the valley, when you start the game, draw a card from

SteelStash:

the story deck and place it face up.

SteelStash:

This is your hive in where you are right now.

SteelStash:

As you explore, add more cards to your valley map, each card being a new region.

SteelStash:

To know whether the region you're adding is located below, beside

SteelStash:

or above your current location.

SteelStash:

Compare the numbers of both cards and interpret the result.

SteelStash:

If the new card is higher than your current location, place it above.

SteelStash:

If it is lower, place it below.

SteelStash:

Otherwise, place it on one of the sides.

SteelStash:

Use rolling tables for inspiration.

SteelStash:

Place slips of paper on top of the cards to note down details about the region.

SteelStash:

Now, as we've said, you need to find six jars of royal jelly in order

SteelStash:

for your hive to survive and thrive.

SteelStash:

Once again, each is being held by a creature.

SteelStash:

To find these creatures, discover a region.

SteelStash:

If the cards you add to the map is a face card, Jack King or queen.

SteelStash:

That region includes one of these si six creatures below creatures of the valley

SteelStash:

will be discovered in the listed order.

SteelStash:

So first you'll find ants, which are friends.

SteelStash:

Next you will find the lady bird, which is a foe.

SteelStash:

Then dragon flies, which are friends.

SteelStash:

Then praying Mantis, which is a foe.

SteelStash:

Then the Beatle, which is a friend.

SteelStash:

Then the Sparrow, which is a foe.

SteelStash:

While the Valley is a beautiful place home to many insects, some are kindly

SteelStash:

friends, others may wish you harm when you discover a region and add a card

SteelStash:

to your map if that card is an ace or a two roll two D six s on the insecta

SteelStash:

table and add both totals together to determine what insects you find.

SteelStash:

And this has a lovely list of different insects you might find both.

SteelStash:

Friendly and not that you can interact with, as well as some

SteelStash:

lovely flavor texts on it as well to help guide you in that interaction.

SteelStash:

Resting and fatigue, you may have to mark fatigue as a result of an action.

SteelStash:

When your fatigue is full or your story deck is empty, you will have to rest.

SteelStash:

Or flee to live another day or risk becoming too exhausted to continue

SteelStash:

when you rest, fly back to the hive and fill an entry in your journey Book.

SteelStash:

Shuffle the cards you discarded when making actions in your

SteelStash:

journey and clear your fatigue.

SteelStash:

Treasures.

SteelStash:

What is treasure to a bee, honey and friendship, but other insects like things.

SteelStash:

Like grains, fungi, and nectar.

SteelStash:

Treasures can be used to barter with other insects for items,

SteelStash:

information, or favors for certain insects, like answer, caterpillars

SteelStash:

best to come with treasure in hand.

SteelStash:

Now, through your travels, you may find yourself confronting a creature

SteelStash:

with withholds, a jar of royal jelly.

SteelStash:

Build a stack of carbs.

SteelStash:

Build a stack of cards as described in the fight, a creature action.

SteelStash:

When the number of cards in the stack matches the creature's

SteelStash:

strength, they are overcome.

SteelStash:

If you flee from a creature, their stack resets and you must

SteelStash:

start from the beginning when you face that creature again.

SteelStash:

And then it also lists how many cards you need to build for each of the particular.

SteelStash:

Foes that you have, lady Bird being eight cards, mantis being

SteelStash:

eight, and the sparrow being 13.

SteelStash:

However, with these, some of the suits do count as two cards in the stack, so

SteelStash:

a nice way to get a two for one benefit.

SteelStash:

So various actions you can do.

SteelStash:

All right?

SteelStash:

You can confront risk when in the face of physical, emotional, or social adversity,

SteelStash:

there will be action plus approach.

SteelStash:

If you are in bloom, that is a full success.

SteelStash:

If you are budding a partial and if you wither, it is a setback

SteelStash:

and you need to mark one fatigue.

SteelStash:

Searching for treasure will be action plus approach.

SteelStash:

Again, bloom two treasures budding, one.

SteelStash:

Treasure wither fatigue.

SteelStash:

Barter trading for knowledge are items decide on a number of

SteelStash:

treasures to expend and roll action.

SteelStash:

Plus treasures bloom.

SteelStash:

You get exactly what you're looking for, budding.

SteelStash:

You get partial information or offered another deal withered.

SteelStash:

You get ambiguous information or your deal is declined.

SteelStash:

Discover a region when you look for a new path.

SteelStash:

Roll action plus approach upon Bloom.

SteelStash:

Add two cards to your map.

SteelStash:

Budding.

SteelStash:

Add either one of the cards you draw to your map.

SteelStash:

And wither the path is hidden.

SteelStash:

Add either one of the cards to your map, face down and mark one fatigue.

SteelStash:

To reveal the hidden path you may barter or confront risk

SteelStash:

fighting a creature is action plus approach, and you are going to continue

SteelStash:

to repeat this until you've stacked enough cards to match the creature's strength.

SteelStash:

So upon Bloom stack two cards on the creature budding stack.

SteelStash:

Either one of the cards on the creature and wither you must evade danger.

SteelStash:

To evade danger,

SteelStash:

it is action plus approach.

SteelStash:

Upon bloom, you avoid the danger.

SteelStash:

Budding mark one, fatigue wither mark two, fatigue, and then

SteelStash:

getting an answer from the Oracle.

SteelStash:

When you want answers to a yes, no question, roll action plus two if

SteelStash:

likely, or plus zero if unlikely.

SteelStash:

Otherwise, roll action plus one.

SteelStash:

Upon bloom, the answer is yes.

SteelStash:

And budding yes, but, and wither no.

SteelStash:

And finally, you do have some lovely tables to help out

SteelStash:

with your actions and regions

SteelStash:

as well as themes and events.

SteelStash:

So if you need any help, there are some beautiful tables there to help you out.

SteelStash:

So without further ado, let us go ahead and dive on into our game play.

SteelStash:

So I've already taken the liberty of filling out my character sheet.

SteelStash:

I will be playing buzz buzzing 10.

SteelStash:

He him.

SteelStash:

Now I know that we need to get this hive back as quickly as possible,

SteelStash:

so I took my plus two and quick.

SteelStash:

When I cannot be fast, I'm going to attempt to be forceful

SteelStash:

because this is an emergency.

SteelStash:

So that is going to be my plus one, and unfortunately that

SteelStash:

makes my patients plus zero.

SteelStash:

So first things first,

SteelStash:

let's go ahead and get

SteelStash:

our hive.

SteelStash:

That is unfortunate that we pulled a queen right off the bat.

SteelStash:

I mean that's amusing.

SteelStash:

It is amusing that though the queen is dead.

SteelStash:

The hive is a queen.

SteelStash:

So let us go ahead and draw two more cards.

SteelStash:

This will be our.

SteelStash:

This will be our Discover region.

SteelStash:

All right, so once again for Discover a region when you look for a new

SteelStash:

Path roll Action plus approach.

SteelStash:

So we are gonna be traveling quickly.

SteelStash:

We're gonna be traveling quickly, so that's gonna be two D six plus two.

SteelStash:

As we speed away, we got nine.

SteelStash:

All right, so

SteelStash:

technically, Technically the rules say higher.

SteelStash:

So we don't have a meets or beat situation,

SteelStash:

which means that I am in wither.

SteelStash:

So upon wither the path is hidden, add either one of the cards to your

SteelStash:

map, face down and mark one fatigue.

SteelStash:

We're gonna roll a D two.

SteelStash:

We're gonna roll one D two to determine which card I'm keeping,

SteelStash:

cuz I wanna keep that queen because I know that there's royal jelly there.

SteelStash:

Now this is not explicitly in the rules.

SteelStash:

Of course, I, I got a one which is the nine, so I'm keeping the nine.

SteelStash:

The nine is below Queen, my hive.

SteelStash:

So that's gonna go below.

SteelStash:

Now I can either confront risk or barter.

SteelStash:

In order to attempt

SteelStash:

to find that path.

SteelStash:

We are not gonna do that right now.

SteelStash:

We're just gonna attempt to discover a new path, but I am

SteelStash:

gonna mark my one fatigue thus far.

SteelStash:

All right, so we are off to a strong start.

SteelStash:

Maybe being quick is not.

SteelStash:

The most beneficial.

SteelStash:

Unfortunately, we don't have time to learn rules or to learn valuable life lessons.

SteelStash:

So let us discover a new path

SteelStash:

and we will once again be traveling quick.

SteelStash:

All right, we got an 11 which is higher than both, which is higher than both,

SteelStash:

so that means I get to keep both cards unfortunately they are below the queen,

SteelStash:

So these would both have to go below.

SteelStash:

Actually, this is what we're gonna do.

SteelStash:

We're gonna slide that over there, and then we're gonna

SteelStash:

just do this with these guys.

SteelStash:

And we'll say that I have two regions

SteelStash:

that I can explore.

SteelStash:

So starting off with starting off with the seven.

SteelStash:

Starting off with the seven, let's see, what should we do?

SteelStash:

We are going, or, well, first of all, let's get a description of our region.

SteelStash:

So that is a that's two D six rolling.

SteelStash:

Two D six and we got 40 or we got four and two.

SteelStash:

So four and two is a tomato patch.

SteelStash:

How very apropo?

SteelStash:

We had a red card.

SteelStash:

It's a seven of diamonds and we got a tomato patch.

SteelStash:

That's lovely.

SteelStash:

Let's see.

SteelStash:

So let's go ahead and search for treasure in this tomato patch.

SteelStash:

And.

SteelStash:

We're gonna be a little patient.

SteelStash:

We're gonna be a little patient as we search this tomato patch

SteelStash:

as we need.

SteelStash:

We, we know we need tradable goods.

SteelStash:

We know we're gonna need something to trade.

SteelStash:

Unfortunately, that two or that two and four makes six.

SteelStash:

And my lowest card was a six.

SteelStash:

So that

SteelStash:

has me in wither.

SteelStash:

Luckily for searching for treasure that is only marking one fatigue.

SteelStash:

So we're gonna go ahead and mark our one fatigue.

SteelStash:

I am gonna search for treasure one last time.

SteelStash:

This time I'm gonna be forceful.

SteelStash:

I'm a little angry that my patient search or my patient search has

SteelStash:

done nothing except make me tired.

SteelStash:

Luckily, there's an ace on the board, so I'm going to find something this time.

SteelStash:

So I rolled six total.

SteelStash:

I rolled six total.

SteelStash:

Like I said, there is an ace on the board, so I do find one treasure hooray for me,

SteelStash:

as my treasure seeking is budding.

SteelStash:

So I think we're gonna move on down to the three.

SteelStash:

We're gonna continue south.

SteelStash:

And what type of region is this?

SteelStash:

What type of region are we in?

SteelStash:

Three 16 flowers.

SteelStash:

All right.

SteelStash:

Sounds like exactly the type of region I want to be in.

SteelStash:

Now I've already searched for treasurer.

SteelStash:

I'm not entirely sure what I want to do here.

SteelStash:

So let's go ahead and roll on, act on the action table.

SteelStash:

And I got 31.

SteelStash:

Impress, impress.

SteelStash:

All right, so we're in a flower patch.

SteelStash:

We are trying to impress somebody.

SteelStash:

I am gonna say that as we're buzzing around this flower patch that we

SteelStash:

come across a butterfly, cuz why not?

SteelStash:

Why not we can do that?

SteelStash:

So we come across a butterfly and we want to try and impress this butterfly.

SteelStash:

So I think what we're going to do,

SteelStash:

we're gonna try to impress it with our quick flight.

SteelStash:

We are definitely gonna have ourselves a little flight of the bubble and be moment.

SteelStash:

All right, I accidentally discarded that card.

SteelStash:

That's fine.

SteelStash:

We'll flip over a new one

SteelStash:

and we got a 10, so we are in bloom.

SteelStash:

We are in bloom, so we definitely impress this butterfly and we're gonna call this a

SteelStash:

we're gonna call part of that impressing.

SteelStash:

It's part of that impressing We will say that we are bartering

SteelStash:

for information about this unknown region about this unknown region,

SteelStash:

and

SteelStash:

so we are trying to find out about the unknown region.

SteelStash:

The butterfly is thoroughly impressed and tells us about it.

SteelStash:

So let's go ahead and let's go ahead and see what the region is.

SteelStash:

Five two.

SteelStash:

It is a trail.

SteelStash:

So, yeah, the butterfly tells us about this trail that we can find and warns us.

SteelStash:

That warns us that this trail is not to be lightly tread.

SteelStash:

This is.

SteelStash:

This is a it's a well worn trail.

SteelStash:

It's well worn game trail, so like it's popular with the birds.

SteelStash:

It's popular with the spiders.

SteelStash:

Plenty of places for a poor little insect to be caught up in, but.

SteelStash:

If, if one can successfully navigate the trail, then there is

SteelStash:

definitely, there is definitely a prize at the end of that tunnel.

SteelStash:

But the butterfly will not go into more detail about what that prize is, so we

SteelStash:

will go ahead and fly up to this trail.

SteelStash:

And we are going to confront danger.

SteelStash:

We are going to confront danger by attempting to fly

SteelStash:

quickly through the trail.

SteelStash:

Oh, I barely need to roll.

SteelStash:

All right, so I rolled an 11, but I drew a two and a three.

SteelStash:

All right.

SteelStash:

So I definitely, I definitely succeed in this.

SteelStash:

I am definitely in bloom on this confront danger or confront risk.

SteelStash:

So I have a full success as I travel through this trail.

SteelStash:

Let's see what the let's see what we get for theme.

SteelStash:

So we can try to determine the type of reward.

SteelStash:

It's four, three

SteelStash:

redemption redemption.

SteelStash:

Hmm.

SteelStash:

What type of reward would be redemption?

SteelStash:

How does this trail, how does the reward at this trail help redeem our little b?

SteelStash:

Well, we know the redemption is at the end of the trail,

SteelStash:

so that would be a new region.

SteelStash:

So let's go ahead and draw a new region.

SteelStash:

Let's go ahead and draw a new region.

SteelStash:

And we will continue on with our quick roll.

SteelStash:

Which is a total of a seven.

SteelStash:

I drew an ACE and a two.

SteelStash:

That means I get to place both of those.

SteelStash:

But the unfortunate thing about ACE and two is the fact that

SteelStash:

those make me roll on the insecta table.

SteelStash:

So I still haven't quite figured out any redemption.

SteelStash:

So,

SteelStash:

all right, so first of all, let's move to the two.

SteelStash:

Let's roll on our region to find out what area that we're in.

SteelStash:

One.

SteelStash:

One

SteelStash:

Leafs.

SteelStash:

We're in a leafy region.

SteelStash:

And then let's find out what insecta, we discover eight,

SteelStash:

which is the spider.

SteelStash:

The spider beware the spider's web.

SteelStash:

If you're caught, you have little chance.

SteelStash:

Well, that's encouraging.

SteelStash:

I don't see how that's very redemptive.

SteelStash:

So I'm going to say we either have to confront risk or evade danger on this.

SteelStash:

We are going to evade danger quickly.

SteelStash:

All right.

SteelStash:

That's not looking good for us.

SteelStash:

I drew an five and an eight.

SteelStash:

And I rolled a six.

SteelStash:

So mark one, fatigue.

SteelStash:

So it looks like I evade the danger, but I need to mark one fatigue

SteelStash:

and I'm currently at three outta five fatigue.

SteelStash:

All right, let's travel down to the Ace and see what we find there

SteelStash:

first.

SteelStash:

Rolling our region, we got five, two.

SteelStash:

Which is going to be another trail.

SteelStash:

Maybe the redemption is at the end of this entire thing because we went from

SteelStash:

a trail to leaves to another trail.

SteelStash:

It seems like this leafy region was part of the trail.

SteelStash:

So maybe we have not finished trans traversing the trail

SteelStash:

that the butterfly spoke of,

SteelStash:

but let us go ahead and roll to see what type of insecta we come across.

SteelStash:

And that is another spider's web.

SteelStash:

It seems that our, it seems that our redemption is very far away indeed.

SteelStash:

So we were once again going to evade danger.

SteelStash:

Now this one is not looking good for the home team.

SteelStash:

We were going to evade quickly.

SteelStash:

I drew a jack and a nine.

SteelStash:

So I need to beat a nine.

SteelStash:

Preferably I need to beat an an 11.

SteelStash:

Oh, I got a 13 outstanding.

SteelStash:

I successfully evaded the danger as I quickly,

SteelStash:

as I quickly make my way to a new region.

SteelStash:

So let us discover our new region.

SteelStash:

Continuing on this trail.

SteelStash:

Hopefully we find our redemption at the end.

SteelStash:

I drew a seven and two.

SteelStash:

I got a 13.

SteelStash:

So these cards are, So the seven will go above, the two will go below as

SteelStash:

our valley is starting to look like we're getting little switchbacks in it.

SteelStash:

All right, so what do we have in the seven region?

SteelStash:

4, 6, 4, 6.

SteelStash:

Wheat.

SteelStash:

Wheat,

SteelStash:

and I'm actually gonna search for gold, or I'm gonna search for

SteelStash:

treasure here because I do not have.

SteelStash:

I do not have a lot.

SteelStash:

I am not getting a lot, so I'm gonna do a quick search for treasure.

SteelStash:

Unfortunately, I pull the 10 and a king, so I need to at least

SteelStash:

beat a 10, and I do it, I do it.

SteelStash:

I got 13, so that beats a 10.

SteelStash:

I find one more piece of treasure.

SteelStash:

In this wheat field.

SteelStash:

Unfortunately, I keep drawing all my face cards on random stuff

SteelStash:

and not in my discover regions.

SteelStash:

Highly annoying.

SteelStash:

I drew one and I lost it, like a fool and these are definitely the things

SteelStash:

that I'm thinking as I am transitioning.

SteelStash:

Down this valley.

SteelStash:

Moving down from the seven to the two, let's see what new region we have here.

SteelStash:

36 ferns.

SteelStash:

Oh, this is a two.

SteelStash:

So I also need to roll for my Insecta six.

SteelStash:

Yay.

SteelStash:

It is not another spider.

SteelStash:

Ha.

SteelStash:

Ah, six is a butterfly.

SteelStash:

Beautiful butterfly floats through life with little care for others.

SteelStash:

So let's go ahead and say, this is the same butterfly that we saw in the flowers.

SteelStash:

After all, it's a butterfly.

SteelStash:

It can it can transition over, over the hills and whatnot.

SteelStash:

That would be separating these regions and.

SteelStash:

I don't know what I want to do with this.

SteelStash:

Yeah, I'm not sure what I want to do with this because.

SteelStash:

This is a friendly creature, but it is not like,

SteelStash:

it is.

SteelStash:

Not like it can help me find anything.

SteelStash:

So let's roll on the event table and see what we get there.

SteelStash:

Maybe that might help trigger something.

SteelStash:

One, two redeem.

SteelStash:

So redeem.

SteelStash:

It does not help.

SteelStash:

Like I, I honestly, I think I'm gonna confront this thing.

SteelStash:

I'm gonna confront this butterfly and

SteelStash:

I'm a little annoyed.

SteelStash:

So we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna draw some story cards here.

SteelStash:

We'll figure out what this is after it happens.

SteelStash:

But yeah, I'm going to confront this thing.

SteelStash:

It is going to be forceful because I am miffed.

SteelStash:

I pulled a three and a two, I rolled a four.

SteelStash:

So I am in bloom during this confrontation as I am.

SteelStash:

I am.

SteelStash:

Angry after all you told me to head down this trail, that this trail

SteelStash:

would have a reward at the end.

SteelStash:

My hive is literally dying and all that's happened is I've run into two spiders.

SteelStash:

I've kept going down this trail, so like what is, like, what was this treasure and.

SteelStash:

And the butterfly is going to look at me and flutter away, not like far, like

SteelStash:

it's not running away, it's just going to flutter out of reach from where I'm at and

SteelStash:

makes make some cryptic comment about redemption.

SteelStash:

And of course, I don't know what that means.

SteelStash:

I have no idea what that means because

SteelStash:

like the only redemption that I can possibly think of right

SteelStash:

now is finding some of that royal jelly and saving my hive.

SteelStash:

Redeeming my hive.

SteelStash:

But,

SteelStash:

We're gonna say that this, we're gonna say that this frustrates buzz so much.

SteelStash:

That buzz is actually gonna return to the hive.

SteelStash:

Buzz is gonna return to the hive.

SteelStash:

And he's going to take a rest.

SteelStash:

He's gonna return to the hive.

SteelStash:

He's gonna take a rest.

SteelStash:

That's going to clear my three fatigues,

SteelStash:

and I think while I'm resting that.

SteelStash:

That redemption we're gonna realize is for me I was so quick to try and save the

SteelStash:

hive that I didn't stop and think about.

SteelStash:

I didn't stop and think about what I would find in the valley,

SteelStash:

and that's probably why, that's probably why I missed the ants.

SteelStash:

The first go around.

SteelStash:

And so this whole, this whole redemptive journey is more a process of trying to

SteelStash:

learn that while being quick is an asset, I don't need to make it my defining trait.

SteelStash:

After all, I did do quite well with the butterfly without being quick.

SteelStash:

So I don't need to make quickness my defining trait, and I don't need to

SteelStash:

make quick judgments, quick actions.

SteelStash:

I don't need to make quick decisions that it's okay to pause in the face of a

SteelStash:

complex problem and really think about.

SteelStash:

What it is I need to do and find the right path forward because again,

SteelStash:

after all, I was so quick to try and do what I thought I needed to do, that

SteelStash:

I missed the answer right up front.

SteelStash:

I jumped at the first opportunity for a quote unquote treasure.

SteelStash:

Or reward, and that led to me almost dying twice.

SteelStash:

So yeah, take a pause, take a breath.

SteelStash:

Yes, there is an emergency, but deliberate thought out action

SteelStash:

is going to be much better than.

SteelStash:

Snap decisions based on hunches and no information.

SteelStash:

But that's where we're gonna call it for tonight.

SteelStash:

That is Queenless by Croaker..

SteelStash:

So this is a, this is a delightful little game.

SteelStash:

It really is.

SteelStash:

It really is.

SteelStash:

Thoroughly.

SteelStash:

Thoroughly enjoy it.

SteelStash:

As far as as far as map builders go, great.

SteelStash:

Like, because essentially that's what it is.

SteelStash:

You're building the map to this valley, you're building the map to this valley.

SteelStash:

Yes, you have the, yes, you have the goal of finding the royal jelly, but

SteelStash:

at the end of the day, it's not like,

SteelStash:

that is not the important piece to the gameplay.

SteelStash:

If it was, then, if it was, then there would be a way to

SteelStash:

make the odds of discovering,

SteelStash:

make the odds of discovering a jelly site easier.

SteelStash:

I mean, and I got it.

SteelStash:

I got it.

SteelStash:

You have a 12 and 52 chance, all right?

SteelStash:

Because you got three cards from four suits that could possibly find it.

SteelStash:

And if any one of those cards come up during, but that's the thing, one of

SteelStash:

those cards has to come up during this discover region and then you have to

SteelStash:

succeed in your discover region and.

SteelStash:

You have to not be a silly goose like I was and roll for it and instead choose

SteelStash:

to keep that card when you wither.

SteelStash:

So, you know, again, if finding, if finding the jelly was the actual goal

SteelStash:

of the game, there would be a way to, there would be a way to make that.

SteelStash:

Easier to find, easier to happen on the stage that you needed to happen on.

SteelStash:

Cause I mean, how many times did I have?

SteelStash:

How many times did I have a face card come up during one of my action phases?

SteelStash:

You know, it happened a lot.

SteelStash:

Yeah, in seven rounds I had four face cards and only one of them was only

SteelStash:

one of them was possible for, only one of them was possible for a region I.

SteelStash:

So,

SteelStash:

you know, especially if you're, especially if you're actually drawing, drawing

SteelStash:

cards and doing the, doing the roll off every time or multiple times in a region

SteelStash:

like that just increases the likelihood that you're gonna get a face card.

SteelStash:

So yeah, if, if finding Jelly was the actual goal, then there would be a way to.

SteelStash:

There'd be a way to put a face card somewhere on the table,

SteelStash:

and it could be face down.

SteelStash:

It can be face down.

SteelStash:

Like I'm not saying it has to be a region you can just waltz on into.

SteelStash:

That is absolutely fine.

SteelStash:

But you know, the concept of the concept of bartering for

SteelStash:

information on a region or.

SteelStash:

Bartering for information on a region or confronting risk before

SteelStash:

entering an unknown region.

SteelStash:

You know, it would work a lot better if you if that was going

SteelStash:

to be a region you wanted to go to because there's jelly there, but,

SteelStash:

Yeah, no, I mean outside of that, like I said, this is a,

SteelStash:

this is a map building game.

SteelStash:

The whole point of this is to build your valley and playing it that way.

SteelStash:

Very cute.

SteelStash:

A lot of, a lot of interesting things that you can do.

SteelStash:

A lot of interesting valleys that you can create through this.

SteelStash:

That is, that is quite fun and quite delightful now.

SteelStash:

I really do like the mechanics.

SteelStash:

The mechanics are great.

SteelStash:

I love these mechanics.

SteelStash:

The concept of.

SteelStash:

The concept of rolling a dice versus a card draw is, you know,

SteelStash:

something I haven't seen in you know, something I haven't seen yet.

SteelStash:

Like, there are a lot of, there are a lot of draw cards to get prompts.

SteelStash:

There are a lot of games where you can have cards and dice integrated

SteelStash:

with each other, but never were they the opposition to each other.

SteelStash:

So having that very nice, really loved that bit.

SteelStash:

So mechanic's, great, tone whimsical.

SteelStash:

This is, this is a wonderful, wonderful game.

SteelStash:

And if you felt the same way, you can find Queenless on both

SteelStash:

Itch and drive-through rpg.

SteelStash:

I will have the links to both of those below.

SteelStash:

So make sure you go check those out.

SteelStash:

Choose whichever one your preference is.

SteelStash:

However, if you want an easy way to help out the channel,

SteelStash:

click on the drive-through link.

SteelStash:

Cause I will get like 3 cents if you decide to pick up your own copy

SteelStash:

of Queenless through that link.

SteelStash:

That's right.

SteelStash:

Affiliate marketing through Drive Through.

SteelStash:

So check it out.

SteelStash:

Honestly, I really don't care which which site you pick it

SteelStash:

up from, but go pick it up.

SteelStash:

It's only five bucks.

SteelStash:

This is a great game, really fun, really, really whimsical, and I

SteelStash:

think that you'll have a lot of fun building your own valley with it.

SteelStash:

So go check it out, and if you do, make sure you tell

SteelStash:

'em that SteelStash sent you.

SteelStash:

And remember, I mustache y'all to stay.
